Harry Whittier Frees:Animals as Humans

Harry Whittier Frees was born in 1897 in Pennsylvania. He later became known as a photographer focusing on posed animals. His work appeared on postcards, magazine covers, and in children’s books.

Harry Whittier Frees specialty was dressing up animals in human clothing and posing them in slice of life fashion. To keep the animals in a posed position he utilized stiff costumes, eating utensils, and pins. His work was successful up until his death in 1953. Tragically, after being diagnosed with cancer he took his own life. Still, his photos remain long after his demise; to entertain, enthrall, and make us wonder about the secret lives of animals.

The following collection is from Harry Whittier Frees work, “Humorous scenes of puppies and kittens dressed as humans and posed in human domestic situations.” Although it is not a succinct title it does sum up the collection adeptly. Below you will find a wide range of day-to-day life scenes, extraordinary feats of bravado, and maybe a chuckle or two. All photos were published in 1914.
